Please find below the detailed procedure for installing 73Linux and integrating VARA HF on a Raspberry Pi or Debian-based system.
Phase 1: 73Linux Installation
It is recommended to use a clean installation of Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit).
1. Update System: Run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y.
2. Repository: Install instructions and links here: https://github.com/km4ack/73Linux
3. Configuration: Provide your callsign and grid square when prompted, then reboot the system.
Phase 2: VARA HF Integration
1. Open Menu: Run the 73linux
2. Install Software: Navigate to the software installation section and select VARA HF.
3. Automated Setup: The script will automatically install Wine, download the VARA HF files, and configure the necessary virtual drive.
4. Access: Once complete, the application will be available in the "Hamradio" menu or on your desktop.
Phase 3: Configuration
- Soundcard: In VARA HF settings, select your USB interface (e.g., Signalink or Digirig), which usually appears as "Internal Audio" or by its chipset name.
- PTT: Map the Linux device (e.g., /dev/ttyUSB0) to a Wine COM port if using CAT/COM PTT. No COM setup is required for VOX or Signalink.
- TNC Setup: Verify that TCP Port 8300 is open for client communications
Technical Note for Raspberry Pi Users
Because VARA HF is an x86 application, 73Linux utilizes Box86/Box64 with Wine to enable compatibility with ARM processors. Please note that this process may result in a longer installation time.
(Depending on your station setup and PC type and stats could have an effect on how well VARA will perform)
