Connecting to the TPRFN (The Packet Radio HF Forwarding Network) using QtTermTCP and VARA HF is the standard method for high-speed packet over HF. This setup allows you to chat with nodes, send bulletins, and participate in the monthly PKTNET.
Below is a step-by-step guide to getting connected.
1. Initial Software Setup
Ensure you have the latest versions of the following installed:
- VARA HF: The modem software for audio-to-data conversion.
- QtTermTCP: The terminal program used to interact with the packet network.
Configure VARA HF:
- Open VARA HF and go to Settings > VARA Setup.
- Enter your Callsign and Registration Key (the free version works but is slower).
- Set the TCP Host to 127.0.0.1 and TCP Port to 8300.
- In Settings > Soundcard, select your radio’s input/output (e.g., USB Audio Codec).
- In Settings > PTT, configure your radio’s PTT method (CAT control or COM port).
2. Configuring QtTermTCP
- Open QtTermTCP and go to Setup > Stations.
- Click Add and enter your Callsign.
- Under Interface, select VARA HF.
- Go to Setup > VARA HF and set the IP Address to 127.0.0.1 and Port to 8300.
- Check Auto Connect if you want it to link to the modem on startup.
3. Making the Connection
To join the TPRFN, you must connect to a specific "Hub" or "Relay" node.
- Find a Frequency: Check the TPRFN frequency list or Groups.io. Common activity is on 40m (7.104 MHz USB) or 80m (3.590 MHz USB).
- Radio Settings: Set your radio to USB-D or DATA mode.
- Monitor: Check the VARA HF "Waterfall." If you see green traces or hear "chirping," wait for the frequency to clear.
- Connect: In QtTermTCP, ensure your station is selected. In the command bar, type the callsign of the TPRFN node (e.g., [Node Callsign]) and click Connect.
- Handshake: Once the "Link" light in VARA turns green, the node's welcome text will appear.
4. Using the Network
Common commands once connected:
- N (Nodes): Shows a list of visible stations.
- C [Call] (Connect): Attempt to jump to another node.
- B (Bye): Disconnect from the current node.
- L (List): Shows recent bulletins/messages (if the node has a BBS).
- I (Info): Displays station location and hardware details.
Participating in PKTNET
To check in for the monthly bulletin net:
- Connect to your nearest Hub node.
- If the node has a BBS, type BBS.
- Type SP PKTNET to start a message.
- Follow the prompts for your Subject and Message.
- End the message with /EX or Ctrl+Z on a new line.
Critical Tip: Ensure your radio's ALC is at zero when transmitting with VARA HF. Overdriving the signal causes retries and slows down the network.
